Reader Mailbag- Cleanup and Shaving

Reader Marvin asked these questions in the comments section of another post:

Hi JRob

First of all Thank You for all that you do making it a little less difficult in deciding which unit to get.

My main concern is I workout everyday and sweat and feel that the full cap lace unit would works best for me because of thinning sides and back. How often would I be able to clean my scalp and unit? Also is this something I can take off at night? and if not how long does it stay on before cleaning?

Thank you so much,
Marvin

Hey Marvin,

A full cap is a great option for guys like us who don’t have strong side and back hair.

The time you will be able to go between attachments will vary from person to person depending upon many factors. Some people can go up to 14 days or more before they need to do a removal, but don’t count on being able to get that long of an attachment yourself. I personally can only go a maximum of 7 days before I have to do a removal and cleanup. Bottom line- you won’t know until you try it yourself. Stronger tapes and glues can lengthen your attachment time but they are still at the mercy of your body chemistry and the environment.

As for nightly removal- that is definitely a possibility but you might find that it to be too time consuming to re-attach every day. I have found that if you use tape you can sometimes remove the unit by peeling it off your head with the tape still on the unit and you can reuse the tape again one or two more times by applying a thin coat of glue to reactivate the tack. The tape will eventually need to be removed and changed though.

Another reader has a question about keeping his existing hair under his full cap:

Hey JRob, thank you sooo much for this blog! It is GOOD! I’d like to ask you: I’m a mixed man, my hair only allow me to do a razor cut because otherwise I’ll look ridiculous! So with that being said, do you think I can wear full wigs and still have my hair underneath without looking unnatural?
Thank you so much!

A lot of guys ask about keeping their existing hair for various reasons. I have seen a couple of guys who have kept their hair temporarily to make sure they were ready to make the transition before shaving, but in the long run you will probably have to shave everything off to get a good result. If you do decide to keep your existing hair keep in mind that the unit will probably look different after you shave.
