How I Got Started in Hair Replacement
When a friend of mine approached me one day and told me that he was wearing a hairpiece, I was shocked. I was completely taken by surprise when he introduced me to the world of modern, non-surgical hair replacement. I had always thought that toupees and wigs were tacky and easy to spot. I was floored. I couldn’t believe that such a natural look could be achieved using what essentially is “fake” hair.
I was even more shocked to find out that thanks to the internet, I wouldn’t have to pay thousands of dollars every year to have a great looking head of hair. I learned that it was possible to purchase a high quality hairpiece for a fraction of what a chain salon would charge, and that with a little practice, it would be possible for me to do everything in the privacy of my own home for a very reasonable price.
I had been shaving my head for several years before I learned about hairpieces and DIY hair replacement. I was intrigued at the thought of once again being able to have hair and to be able to wear different styles….something I hadn’t been able to do for quite some time, so I decided to give it a try.
My first pieces were toppers, or toupee’s, as they were called years ago. I hadn’t seen my own growing hair in many years, so it wasn’t until I began to grow out my side and back hair that I realized that my side hair was horribly thin. It was quite a challenge to achieve a realistic look with patchy, whispy, and extremely thin side hair. I was forced to use a concealer to hide the thin areas, and although the result was passable, the constant maintenance and inconsistent results led me to search for an alternative.
I had read about “Full Cap” hairpieces on the internet, and a few people were wearing them and seemed to be satisfied with the results, but the general consensus was that transitioning to a full cap was an absolute LAST resort that should only be attempted after exhausting all other options.
It just so happened that I was at that point where my options were either to try out a full cap, or go back to shaving my head. I really had nothing to lose other than the few hundred dollars it would cost to have a unit made, so I decided to give it a try. I had heard all of the negative comments about full caps, so I was naturally hesitant, but I thought to myself “How bad can it be? If I can make a topper look decent by painting concealers on the side of my head, I CAN make this thing work”
When my first order arrived I had to cut the base and remove some of the hair to modify the temple areas and hairline on my first two units, but once they were cut and styled, they looked amazing! I later performed a few more minor modifications to the base to enhance the realism, and the end result was beyond all of my expectations.
I have proven that it is possible for a man to wear a super realistic looking full cap hair system. Is it your turn?
Sup Rob, where do you get pcs from?
Since I am involved in the hair business, I get units from many different companies.
Rob – is it possible to see pics of your full cap? You could email to me if you’d rather not post online?
Chris,
Look back on some of the older blog posts. You will find several pics of my various full caps. I am currently wearing a mohawk so I don’t even have the ability to take any new full cap photos.
Also….I will be able to continue with the final stages of the production of my Full Cap DVD very soon, which gives a full-0n, 360 degree view of what a full cap can look like.
